Pietro il grande pronto a riprendersi le prime pagine acquatiche? Dal portale ed.nl, poi riportato da swimvortex.com, l’ex triplice oro olimpico Pieter Van den Hoogenband si candiderebbe a prossimo Direttore Tecnico del nuoto olandese dopo le Olimpiadi di Rio 2016. “Non so se sia ufficiale, perché Pieter non ha voluto commentare l’articolo – spiega a Swimbiz.it l’ex sprinter orange Jasper Van Mierlo – ma è un rumor che circolava da tempo. Per me sarebbe perfetto, conosce gli atleti e la Federazione. Lo scrissi anche in un articolo di fondo su hollandswimming.nl, l’anno scorso”. Fu una dura critica ad alcuni aspetti dell’attuale nuoto olandese. Usando termini come vriendjespolitiek, nepotismo. Ed evidenziando la convocazione in nazionale di atleti che non nuotavano il tempo limite. Il cronometro non più unico giudice. Qualcosa che, in Australia, temono possa succedere anche nella nazionale Aussie(leggi qui). Van Mierlo oggi pensa al lavoro. Si allena ancora, ma il ritorno all’agonismo è solo un’icona aperta nella sua mente. Si allenava in Italia, nel team internazionale Adn Swim Project di Andrea Di Nino a Caserta. A Swimbiz.it spiegò così il perché della sua rinuncia: la federazione non aveva gradito la scelta di allenarsi all’estero, chiudendogli le porte della nazionale(leggi qui). “In tanti sono costretti ad allenarsi in altri Paesi – eppure, la società olandese è storicamente aperta – ed è così, ma non in tutti i segmenti”. L’addio dell’ex Direttore Tecnico Jacco Verhaeren, invece “Fu una sua scelta. In Australia cercava una nuova esperienza, ricevendo inoltre un compenso maggiore”. Il vero problema, per Van Mierlo “E’ che abbiamo grandi atleti e tecnici, ma mal distribuiti. Ci concentriamo solo su velocità e acque libere. Distanze lunghe e cinquantisti sono trascurati”. Quest’anno la federazione ha stabilito che, per nuotare i 50 m nelle gare giovanili, si debba prima stabilire il tempo di qualifica nei 200 m del relativo stile. Appoggiarsi ad allenatori stranieri “Sarebbe una possibile soluzione – magari italiani, visto il lavoro di questi anni nel mezzofondo – Gabriele Detti ne è un grande esempio”. Nuoto olandese in primo piano anche per la notizia della candidatura del presidente federale Erik van Heijningen alla presidenza Len “In realtà, non so se sia confermato o solo un rumor. Non lo conosco bene”. Ma dall’articolo di ed.nl, Van den Hoogenband punterebbe il dito soprattutto contro il General Manager Jan Kossel. Chiedendone le dimissioni come premessa necessaria alla candidatura dell’ex velocista a Dt “La penso come Pieter – commenta Van Mierlo – Kossel ha poca esperienza di nuoto”. Alle parole di Van den Hoogenband, Jan Kossel avrebbe replicato “Sarebbe opportuno che Pieter ponesse attenzione a cosa questo ruolo comporti, prima di dare giudizi. Parlerò con lui di questa storia”.

Websites ed.nl and swimvortex.com report that former three times Olympic gold medalist Pieter Van den Hoogenband would be ready to run for the role of Technical Director of Dutch swimming after Rio 2016 Olympics. “I am not quite sure if it's the truth, as Pieter didn't want to comment on the article – former dutch national swimmer Jasper Van Mierlo says to Swimbiz.it - but this news has been rumored already in the swimming community. In my opinion, Pieter would be the perfect. He knows the swimmers and KNZB. Last year I wrote a column for hollandswimming.nl about this”. A very critic column about some aspects of today’s Dutch swimming. He used words like vriendjespolitiek, nepotism. And noticed that some swimmers were accepted in the national team despite they had not swum time limit. Chrono no more the only judge. Something that, in Australia, coaches fear could happen in the Aussie national team too(read here). Today, Van Mierlo focuses on work. He still swims, but a return to competitions is no more than an open icon in his mind. He used to train in Italy, in the Andrea Di Nino’s international team And Swim Project. Last year, he explained to Swimbiz.it why he had decided to leave agonistic swimming: Dutch swimming federation didn’t like the idea he trained in a foreign country and closed the doors of the national team(read here). “A lot of Dutch swimmers are forced to move to different countries to train – Dutch society is traditionally very open – that’s true, but not in all segments”. The end of Jacco Verhaeren’s age as Technical Drector “Was his personal decision. He wanted a new challenge and his job in Australia is paid way better”. The real problem of Dutch swimming, according to Van Mierlo “Is that we have great athletes and coaches, but not distributed well. We only focus on sprint and open water, with little attention for mid-distance and 50 m”. This year, KNZB has installed the regulation that junior swimmers can only swim a 50 m event of a discipline if they also swam the qualifying time in the 200 m distance of that event. Jan Kossel would have replied to Van den Hoogenband “It would be good if Pieter first paid attention to what the job entails and then made his judgement. I will speak to him on that issue”.
